Before you hit the door for your family vacation this summer it’s important to make sure you are prepared and have all the essentials. A week at the beach without your swimsuit, sunscreen or comfortable shoes would be a hassle but there’s one thing people often don’t prepare for that can quickly ruin a family vacation – an unexpected injury or illness.
A sudden and unexpected injury or illness can be scary and overwhelming, especially if you don’t do your homework ahead of time. A good way to not get caught off guard is do a little research about the location you’ll be visiting and the healthcare facilities that are nearby, and that doesn’t just include hospitals. Urgent treatment or walk-in clinics are also a great way to get the help you need.
Wait times in emergency rooms can sometimes be an hour or more, and if you have a less-serious injury or illness you could find yourself waiting even longer. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the types of injuries or illnesses that each facility is equipped to handle.
An urgent care facility will be able to treat a majority of injuries or illnesses, but any situation that is life-threatening or limb-threatening should be handled by an emergency room.
Additionally, any time you sustain an injury or illness while on vacation it is important to follow up with your primary care provider once you arrive back home.
If you don’t have a primary care provider, please call (859) 258-4362 or visit LexingtonClinic.com for help finding one.
