Speaker Biographies:
W. Ben Kibler, MD | Dr. Kibler is the Medical Director for the Lexington Clinic Orthopedics – Sports Medicine Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Kibler serves on the Sports Science Committee of the U.S. Tennis Association and is a founding member of the Society of Tennis Medicine and Science. Dr. Kibler is a fellow and former vice president for the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Kibler has presented and written prolifically on all areas of sports medicine. He specializes in the upper extremity, shoulder pathology, scapula and biomechanics of tennis medicine.
KLAUS BAK, MD | Dr. Klaus Bak is a member of the Department of Orthopaedics at Parkensprivat Hospital in Denmark. Dr. Bak is a member of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Trauma; the European Society for Surgery of the Knee and Arthrocsopy; the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He specializes in both shoulder and knee surgery and has written multiple manuscripts regarding shoulder problems in swimming.
PETER W. HESTER, MD | Dr. Peter Hester is a member of the Lexington Clinic Orthopedics – Sports Medicine Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Hester is a team physician for numerous professional teams, colleges and high schools in the Lexington area. Dr. Hester’s interest lies in arthroscopy of knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow and sports injuries.
DAVID C. DOME, MD, ATC | Dr. David Dome is a member of the Lexington Clinic Orthopedics – Sports Medicine Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Dome is a team physician for numerous professional teams, colleges and high schools in the Lexington area. Dr. Dome’s interest lies in the arthroscopy of the shoulder and elbow.
JOHN E. (JED) KUHN, MD | Dr. Kuhn is an associate professor at Vanderbilt University and Chief of Shoulder Surgery at Vanderbilt Sports Medicine Center. Dr. Kuhn is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is the only member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons in the state of Tennessee. Dr. Kuhn’s clinical interests include arthroscopic shoulder surgery, the evaluation and treatment of the athlete’s shoulder, and methods of keeping the older athlete active.
AUGUSTUS MAZZOCCA, MD | Dr. Mazzocca is an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He is the director of the Orthopedic Bioskills Laboratory and director of resident education for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Mazzocca is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society, the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow and is a co-founder of the New England Shoulder and Elbow Society. He specializes in the management of shoulder and elbow problems.
TREVOR W. WILKES, MD | Dr. Trevor Wilkes is a member of the Lexington Clinic Orthopedics – Sports Medicine Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Wilkes is a team physician for numerous professional teams, colleges and high schools in the Lexington area. His professional interests include sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, injuries of the shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle and foot, osteoarthritis, joint preservation, knee, and shoulder replacement, work-related injuries and trauma.
JOHN BORSTAD, PHD, PT | Dr. Borstad is an assistant professor of Physical Therapy at the School of Allied Medical Professions at The Ohio State University. Dr. Borstad is on the board of directors of the International Shoulder Group and is currently in the third year of a five year National Institutes of Health Career Development Award examining posterior glenohumeral capsule extensibility. He teaches entry-level biomechanics and orthopaedics and advises MS and PhD students at OSU. His research focuses on the relationship of scapulothoracic biomechanics to the etiology and measurement and treatment of subacromial impingement syndrome at the shoulder.
ANN COOLS, PHD, PT | Dr. Cools is a physiotherapist and professor at Ghent University in Belgium. She has published, taught and presented prolifically on a national and international level. Dr. Cools has a teaching and research assignment at Ghent University in basic education and advanced courses. Her topic of research and teaching expertise and her clinical work is in general shoulder rehabilitation and a sport specific approach with scapular involvement in particular.
MARK COTE, DPT, PT | Dr. Cote is a licensed physical therapist working in conjunction with the University of Connecticut orthopedic surgeons. He works in the Department of Rehabilitation Services and Orthopedic Surgery. In addition to his clinical practice he coordinates and conducts clinical research.
DAVID EBAUGH, PHD, PT | Dr. Ebaugh has more than 20 years of experience as a physical therapist. Dr. Ebaugh is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists and the American Society of Biomechanics. He has presented at the national and international level and is published in “Clinical Biomechanics,” “Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology” and “The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.”
PAULA LUDEWIG, PHD, PT | Dr. Ludewig is an associate professor of physical therapy in the department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota. Her research and teaching interests are in the area of orthopedic biomechanics, with particular interest in mechanisms of injury and rehabilitation approaches for the shoulder. Dr. Ludewig serves as an associate editor for “The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy” and has published numerous articles in the area of shoulder biomechanics and rehabilitation.
PHIL MCCLURE, PHD, PT | Dr. McClure is an associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Arcadia University. He also practices at Penn Therapy and Fitness, an outpatient clinic affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. He has been the recipient of the National Teaching Award from the Orthopedic Section, APTA and the Lindback Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award from Arcadia University. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Hand Therapy and Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy. His publications have appeared in several journals including Spine, Journal of Hand Therapy, Physical Therapy and Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
LORI MICHENER, PHD, PT, ATC, SCS | Dr. Michener is a member of the Department of Physical Therapy at Virginia Commonwealth University. She holds a joint appointment in the School of Medicine’s Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology and serves as the director of the COOR Laboratory. Dr. Michener has a clinical practice in orthopedics and sports physical therapy at the VCU Sports Medicine Clinic. Her research interests are in the areas of shoulder biomechanics, diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions, assessment of treatment effectiveness and outcomes in patients with upper extremity and cervical dysfunctions.
AMEE SEITZ, PHD, PT | Dr. Seitz is a licensed physical therapist and board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist. She joined the Shoulder Biomechanics Lab as a post-doctoral research fellow after completing her PhD in Rehabilitation and Movement Science. Her research interests are in the neuromuscular and biomechanical mechanisms of shoulder pain and associated clinical outcomes of rehabilitation.
CHUCK THIGPEN, PHD, PT, ATC | Dr. Thigpen is a clinical researcher for Proaxis Therapy and assistant clinical professor in the Division of Physical Therapy at Duke University. He also serves as the Education Chair for the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists. His publications and clinical specialties include rehabilitation and manual therapy of the upper extremity, sports medicine and biomechanics.
TIM UHL, PHD, PT, ATC, FNATA | Dr. Uhl is the director of the Musculoskeletal Laboratory and an associate professor in the Division of Athletic Training at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Uhl’s research interest is in the area of shoulder pathology, electromyography, and outcomes. He has presented and written prolifically in the areas of orthopedics and sports medicine.
ROBIN CROMWELL, PT | Robin is a member of the Lexington Clinic Orthopedics – Sports Medicine Center in Lexington, Kentucky. She specializes in the Lexington Clinic approach to shoulder rehabilitation, which is centered on the position, motion, and control of the scapula and incorporates trunk, hip, and leg motion in the therapeutic exercise for shoulder dysfunction. Robin has presented prolifically on this approach throughout the United States and in Italy.
AARON SCIASCIA, MS, ATC, NASM-PES | Aaron Sciascia is the coordinator of the Shoulder Center of Kentucky. He is certified as a National Academy of Sports Medicine Performance Enhancement Specialist and serves as an adjunct professor and approved clinical instructor for Eastern Kentucky University’s accredited athletic training education program. He has served as secretary of the Kentucky Athletic Trainers’ Society and resides on the Kentucky Advisory Council on Athletic Trainers. Aaron is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association as well as the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists. He has presented and written prolifically in the areas of orthopedics and sports medicine.
Lab Instructors:
DAUN KAROLICH, PT, MS | Daun Karolich provides services in biomechanical principles with an emphasis in shoulder/scapula and hip/pelvic dysfunctions and manual therapy skills including Maitland, Mulligan, McKenzie and muscle energy training. She received her degree in Physical Therapy, University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois and her masters in Rehabilitation Management from DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois.
MIEMIE DORFLING, PT, OCS | Originally from South Africa, she has more than 25 years of experience in musculoskeletal manual therapy and spine and peripheral joint rehabilitation. Miemie is a board-certified Orthopedic Specialist and received her degree from the University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, South Africa. She is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy Association.
MARK KLUEMPER, PT, MPT | Mark received his degree in physical therapy and his masters from the University of Kentucky. He provides services in shoulder function and rehabilitation, sports and work rehabilitation. As an NCAA Division 1 swim coach for 15 years, Mark brings a unique point of view to the physical therapy staff and its perspective on shoulder function and rehabilitation.
JESSE C. NEIHEISEL, MPT, CERT.MDT, CSCS, MTC | Jesse is certified in the McKenzie method of mechanical diagnosis and therapy and Paris method of manual therapy. He received his degree in Physical Therapy and masters from the College of Mount Saint Joseph, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has a special interest in manual orthopedic spine therapy and specializes in the evaluation and rehabilitation of spinal derangement and dysfunction using the McKenzie and Paris methods.
JASON NEUFELD, DPT, PT | Dr. Neufeld received his physical therapy degree from Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, Kentucky and his doctorate of physical therapy from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. He provides services in orthopedic and manual therapy, return-to-work, and functional rehabilitation. Dr. Neufeld was a collegiate baseball player and has a professional interest in rehabilitation of overhead athletes.
