Spring is right around the corner, and after a long winter everyone is ready to get some fresh air and a head start on spring cleaning. Along with spring cleaning comes a heightened risk of home injury from lifting, climbing, trimming and chemicals. Each year more than 21 million people visit the emergency room as a result of home injuries. Baxter Napier, M.D., Lexington Clinic Family Medicine physician warns, “Two of the most common reasons for emergency room visits this time of year are injuries from falls and lacerations. Poisonings related to lawn and garden chemicals are also a problem.” Preventing injuries during spring cleaning begins with preparation. Make realistic plans and don’t over exert yourself. Many injuries occur when individuals try to take short cuts or complete projects they should not attempt alone. Before you begin a task gather all of your materials. Be sure to carefully read and follow safety recommendations on materials, including chemical cleaners, bug sprays and other home improvement products. Additionally, do not mix products together. The chemicals in many common products can become very dangerous when mixed. As you work on indoor home improvement projects keep these tips in mind: By following these simple tips, spring cleaning will be a breeze. Just remember to use caution and to take well deserved breaks to enjoy the springtime!
