Surgical Oncology

For most patients undergoing evaluation and treatment of a malignancy, the first step is usually a biopsy of the suspicious area. Subsequent management often includes the removal of the affected tissue by a surgeon specially trained in the operative approach to malignant disease. The specific surgical technique utilized and the extent of surgery necessary varies depending on the type of cancer, the location in the body, and the possible use of combined treatment with other cancer therapies, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy or radiation therapy.
